EDMONDS — A man was killed Friday morning after he lost control of his pickup and slammed into a utility pole in the 22900 block of Highway 99, Edmonds police said.
The wooden pole broke and fell on top of the GMC pickup, crushing the cab, police Sgt. Jeff Jones said. The driver died at the scene.
Witnesses told police the man was speeding north on Highway 99 before hitting the pole on the east side of the highway. The accident occurred at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
The wreck brought electrical wires down across the road, and all lanes of Highway 99 near 229th Street SW were closed for four hours.
Southbound lanes reopened at 11:30 a.m., and one northbound lane reopened at 1 p.m. Friday, Jones said. The remaining two lanes reopened several hours later.
A Snohomish County PUD crew repaired the downed power pole and wires, Jones said. One business lost power.
The man’s name was not released Friday. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy Monday.
