Trumpeter swans off Norman Road south of Stanwood stand out against the blue skies of cold winter days. Protected by federal and state regulations, the migratory trumpeters arrive in Snohomish County in the fall and head back to Alaska in the spring, said Ruth Milner, wildlife biologist for the state Fish and Wildlife department. Hunting of the birds is illegal.
About 500 swans winter in the Snohomish River valley south of Snohomish and Monroe and a growing number can be found in the Stillaguamish Valley from Stanwood to Arlington, Milner said.
In February, the Port Susan Birding Festival offers information about trumpeter swans and other birds in Snohomish County.
