TULALIP – The Tulalip Tribes plan to begin work as soon as possible on a new $11 million tribal administration center on Totem Beach Road above Tulalip Bay.
The proposed three-story building will allow the tribe to centralize its offices, which are now scattered around the reservation, tribal Chairman Stan Jones Sr. said Friday. The building will have 76,000 square feet of space for offices and conference rooms – about twice the size of the current tribal headquarters, he said. Tribal officials hope to move in by November 2006.
Designed by Architectural Design Associates of Everett, the new building will be near the new Tulalip Health Clinic. The tribes’ forestry and environmental offices currently occupy that site in a temporary building.
Once all the tribe’s offices have moved into the new building, the old tribal center, which includes a gymnasium, will be remodeled into a teen center, which long has been a priority among tribal members.
“We’re trying to make it better for the kids,” Jones said. “I’d like to see a swimming pool added. Then they’d have a place to go after school. A lot of them don’t play basketball.”
