TULALIP — Two tribal members were re-elected to the Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors to three-year terms.
The election, held Saturday, was part of the Tulalip Tribes’ twice-yearly General Council meeting. Elections are held each March for the seven-member board, which staggers its terms.
Marie Zackuse and Marlin Fryberg Jr. were both re-elected to their posts on the board. They bested four other candidates running for either position by hundreds of votes.
Fryberg received 408 votes, and Zackuse received 386 votes. Mark Hatch, a tribal policeman, came in third with 208 votes. The other candidates were Jared Parks, Tonia Sheldon and Dawn Simpson.
More than 750 members of the 3,500-member Tulalip Tribes voted in the election. After the initial election, tribal members voted for officers of the board. The result is a board identical to last year.
Mel Sheldon is chairman, ÂZackuse is vice chairwoman, Chuck James is treasurer, Fryberg is secretary. Stan Jones, Glen Gobin and Tony Hatch are also on the board. The board members are scheduled to be sworn in on April 4.
Sheldon, in a prepared statement, said Zackuse’s and Fryberg’s “experience and work ethic carried this day.”
The tribal government is financially stable, but is working to collect money available to American Indians through the American Recovery and Reinvestment stimulus package, Sheldon said.
“The economic downtown will require ongoing monitoring at all levels of tribal operation,” he said.
The Tulalip Grassroots committee, a group of tribal members, proposed a new law that would have prohibited the sale of alcohol west of 27th Avenue NE on the Tulalip Indian Reservation, but the effort failed, said Les Parks, who leads the group.
Another proposal by the group, requiring the tribal government to seek out Indian-owned businesses to provide services, passed by a slim margin, he said.
It’s not clear when that new law will be implemented.
