NOME, Alaska — There’s one less turbine at the Banner Wind Farm just northwest of Nome.
KNOM reports (http://is.gd/oXcyAA) utility manager John Handeland says one of the original 18 turbines at the farm toppled over the weekend when a welded anchor failed.
There was no one on-site when the 50-kilowatt unit was destroyed.
That just leaves 14 of the original turbines in working order. One was destroyed during the first winter of operation, another was taken down and used for parts and one other has issues with its blades.
A maintenance crew is scheduled to arrive this week. Among the work to be completed will be making sure the foundations are secure and bolts are tight on the turbines.
Local utility works will work alongside the crew to gain experience in turbine maintenance.
