Two escape farmhouse fire without injuries

SNOHOMISH — A farmhouse was leveled by a fast-moving fire Wednesday morning.

Two people were asleep in the home, located in the 9000 block of Lowell-Snohomish River Road, when the fire broke out. One man told fire officials he awoke just after midnight to the sounds of crackling and popping but didn’t see any fire until he stepped outside. He spotted flames through the window of an upstairs bedroom, Snohomish Fire District 4 Deputy Chief Ron Simmons said.

Those inside the home escaped without injuries.

The old house was engulfed in flames and the roof collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived. Firefighters from District 1 and District 7 also helped battle the fire.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating. Preliminary reports indicate an electrical problem may have sparked the blaze.

Lynnwood: Burned waffles blamed in fire

Waffles in a toaster appear to have sparked a kitchen fire Wednesday morning that left a Lynnwood family homeless, fire officials said.

The fire broke out around 10:45 a.m. in a rental home in the 2400 block of 135th Place SW, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

The blaze was contained to the kitchen but smoke damage spread throughout the house, forcing the family, a mother and six children, to find another place to stay, Hynes said.

The family did not have renters insurance and the Red Cross responded to provide assistance.

The mother and three children were home when the fire started. They escaped unharmed, Hynes said. The family’s pets, a ferret, two cats and a dog, also got out of the home.

The homeowner did have insurance, said Mike Makela, a fire investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire caused about $120,000 damage, he said.

Machias: Police seek two men in assault

Police are looking for two men whom they believe attacked a sanding truck driver in January.

Snohomish County sheriff’s detectives released the sketches of the men Wednesday in hopes someone might recognize them and call police.

On Jan. 29, a county sanding truck driver, a woman, was parked about 1 p.m. along 171st Avenue SE near Dubuque Road, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

One of the men got out of his car, confronted her and said sand had gotten on his car. He then punched her in the face and left, Hover said.

The suspect is described as white, in his late teens or early 20s, weighing about 185 pounds, with light red hair and blue eyes. The passenger in the car is described as white, and in his late teens or early 20s with dark eyes and dark brown hair.

The men were driving in a bright teal, early-to-mid 1990s Honda Civic two-door.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Snohomish County sheriff’s tip line at 425-388-3845.

Sultan: Head-on crash injures one on U.S. 2

A man trying to change a music CD in his car is believed to have caused a head-on collision Wednesday morning on U.S. 2 near Sultan.

The crash sent a woman to the hospital with leg injuries, officials said.

The accident occurred about 11 a.m. near the intersection of 368th Avenue SE and U.S. 2 between Sultan and Gold Bar, said trooper Keith Leary, a Washington State Patrol spokesman.

A Bothell man, 25, told police he veered into oncoming traffic while changing a CD in his car stereo, Leary said.

The man’s Buick Riviera crashed into the woman’s Honda Accord.

She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Leary said.

The road was blocked for about 45 minutes as crews cleaned up the mess.

Police are investigating possible negligent driving charges against the man.
