MONROE — Two young men were killed early this morning on Highway 522 when their car crossed over the centerline and hit an oncoming pickup truck.
Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said it appears the driver of a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon was headed east on the highway about 2 a.m. when he drove off the road to the right, over corrected, then crossed back onto the road over the centerline and struck a 2001 Ford F250.
Investigators don’t know why the Hyundai veered off the road or whether alcohol was a factor, he said.
The men who were killed were in their 20s, according to the patrol. Their identities and hometowns have not been released as of this afternoon.
A 26-year-old Everett man who sat in the back seat of the car was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries, Leary said.
The driver of the pickup truck, 26, of Snohomish, suffered minor injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, he said. Medics drove him to Valley General Hospital in Monroe.
The collision occurred at milepost 22 west of Monroe, according to state Department of transportation. The accident blocked the road until 6:35 a.m.
