NELSON, British Columbia – Two of three backcountry skiers who died Monday in an avalanche in southeastern British Columbia were residents of Edmonds, authorities said.
The victims were Georgia Lynne Bakke, 42, and Lawrence Gordon Duff, 54, of Edmonds, and Susan Majeski McKnight, 53, of Lake Forest Park, police Sgt. Randy Koch said late Tuesday night.
The three were in a party of eight skiers when the avalanche hit Monday about 30 miles north of the U.S.-Canadian border near the Washington-Idaho line, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported.
Five skiers were heading down Mount Carlyle when four were caught in a slide about 700 yards long and 200 yards wide. One of the four was able to ski to safety, police said.
All eight Americans were staying at Kootenay Mountain Huts at about the 7,000-foot level on Mount Carlyle, six miles north of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.
