SULTAN — Two men landed behind bars after witnesses saw them shoot at the Skykomish River while driving from Sultan to Monroe.
No one was injured in Wednesday’s shooting but two fishermen got quite a scare.
One witness was in a boat in the middle of the river when he heard gunfire. He saw a Honda Civic driving near the river.
The fisherman told police he saw the arm of a passenger in the front seat extended out the window. The passenger was holding a dark-colored handgun, according to a police affidavit filed Thursday in Everett District Court.
Another fisherman was walking along the riverbank when he heard gunshots. He saw one bullet hit the river about 25 feet behind the first fisherman’s boat.
Investigators found three spent 9mm shell casings near the fogline on Ben Howard Road near where the fisherman said the shooting occurred.
Monroe police officers found the Honda Civic parked at an espresso stand on Tualco Road. In addition to the driver and a passenger, there were two women in the back seat of the car.
The male passenger, 24, told police the group had gone up “to the mountains” to shoot a semi-automatic handgun. He denied firing the weapon at the river while on Ben Howard Road.
The driver, also 24, first gave Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies a false name. Police later determined his real name and learned that he was wanted on two arrest warrants, including failing to report to the state Department of Corrections and fourth-degree assault. He also has been deemed a violent offender by state officials.
He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on the warrants along with suspicion of drive-by shooting and being a felon in possession of a gun.
The male passenger was arrested for investigation of first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.
