Japan: A powerful typhoon pummeled southern Japan on Sunday, killing at least three people as it headed north toward Kyushu, the country’s more densely populated islands. Typhoon Dianmu – Mandarin Chinese for “mother of lightning” – was centered about 800 miles southwest of Tokyo with sustained winds of nearly 60 mph and gusts reaching 100 mph, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.
Philippines: Arroyo wins election
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo won another term in office, according to a final election count announced Sunday from the May 10 election. But the opposition, whose candidate was action film star Fernando Poe Jr., said its claims of electoral fraud were ignored and vowed to keep fighting. The final tally had Arroyo with 12,905,808 votes and Poe with 11,782,232.
India: Nuclear hotline in works
India and Pakistan will establish a nuclear hotline to reduce the risk of war, and the longtime South Asian rivals Sunday reaffirmed their commitments to an atomic testing moratorium.
Algeria: Islamic militant leader dead
Troops killed one of North Africa’s most wanted Islamic militants, who had sought to link his insurgent movement in Algeria to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terror network, the military said Sunday. Nabil Sahraoui was the head of the Salafist Group for Call and Combat.
Spain: Columbus’ bell returned
The bronze bell that rang out from Christopher Columbus’ flagship Santa Maria when the explorer first spotted America has been returned to Spanish auctioneers after a legal dispute with Portugal, in whose waters the artifact was found, the Gestion de Activos y Subastas auction house said Sunday.
