Syria still is not fully cooperating with a probe into the assassination of Lebanon’s former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, and investigators would need two more years at this rate, the chief of the inquiry told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday. Detlev Mehlis said it was too early to say if Syria was in violation of a Security Council resolution that threatened “further action” unless Syria cooperates.
Israel: Palestinian poll violence
The Palestinian central election commission shut its doors on Tuesday in protest after masked gunmen burst into its West Bank and Gaza offices, firing in the air and hauling off computers. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas ordered his security forces to protect election workers.
England: Huge fire extinguished
One of the biggest blazes in Europe since World War II was reduced to a few small fires Tuesday as residents and business owners began returning to buildings near the site of the massive oil depot inferno. Firefighters announced that the last of 20 oil tanks ignited in the Buncefield oil depot blaze north of London had been extinguished after a three-day battle.
