MONROE – Drivers should plan ahead and expect delays this week on U.S. 2.
Crews will begin work on a $3.9 million project to install rumble strips and high-visibility striping on US 2 between Monroe and Stevens Pass to help reduce serious collisions on the highway.
“It’s a great safety project for US 2 and we’re excited to get started this spring,” WSDOT Project Engineer Dave Lindberg said in a statement.
On Wednesday, crews are set to apply centerline striping with a 15 mph striping truck on US 2 between Gold Bar and Stevens Pass. The three-hour-long job will be done between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Beginning Thursday, crews will close the eastbound and westbound shoulders of US 2 between Monroe and Tunnel creek from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily for sign work.
Crews will grind in over 40 miles of centerline and shoulder rumble strips on US 2 from just east of Monroe to just west of the Stevens Pass summit to help reduce collisions from drivers who cross the centerline or run off the road.
Crews will also install high-visibility striping to make the centerline more visible to drivers at night and in bad weather.
“Much of the striping will be recessed in the pavement so it won’t be damaged by snow-clearing equipment during the winter,” Lindberg said.
The rumble strip project will wrap up by fall 2008.
“This project is one of six safety improvement projects on U.S. 2 this summer,” said Lindberg.
