Naval Station Everett’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier dropped its mooring lines today at midmorning and started heading south to California waters.
The USS Abraham Lincoln and its crew will undergo the final training session required before it deploys in a couple of months.
The huge warship will be accompanied on this training mission by two Everett guided-missile destroyers, which also will tag along for the deployment: the USS Shoup and the USS Momsen.
The ships are expected to return to Everett in early February to get ready for the six-month trip overseas
The Lincoln’s deployment will be the first for the aircraft carrier since the ship got out of a major overhaul seven months ago in Bremerton.
The Lincoln’s crew is around 3,000, which balloons to more than 5,000 when the air crews come aboard. Each destroyer carries a crew of 350 or so.
