UW football player jailed after allegedly running from police

MILL CREEK — A University of Washington football player was booked into the Snohomish County Jail early Thursday morning for investigation of resisting arrest and possessing a small amount of marijuana.

The Washington State Patrol arrested Huskies running back Johri Fogerson, according to jail records.

He was booked around 6 a.m. and later was released on bail.

Trooper Keith Leary said a man driving a black Lexus was pulled over around 12:30 a.m. Thursday while driving eastbound on 164th Street near I-5. He was stopped because a headlight on his car was not working.

When the trooper asked the driver for his vehicle registration, he observed suspected marijuana in the car, Leary said.

The driver was asked to step out of the car. The man was in the process of being placed under arrest when he broke free and ran eastbound on 164th Street, Leary said.

Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies joined in the search.

Around 3:20 a.m., the trooper was contacted by a state patrol dispatcher and was told the driver had called his mother by cell phone. The driver arranged to meet with her and the trooper at 164th Street and Meadow Road, Leary said.

At that point, he was arrested and booked into jail.

Fogerson is a junior running back on the UW football team whose role has continued to change over the years. He made a sudden move from running back to safety as a freshman, then moved back to offense when current head coach Steve Sarkisian took over. Fogerson was a key contributor as a sophomore in 2009, with 46 rushing yards and 17 receptions as the primary backup to starting tailback Chris Polk.

But a hip injury Fogerson suffered in the 2010 opener derailed his season, and he ended up missing the final 12 games. His role for next season already was in question because of the return of Polk, the emergence of freshman Jesse Callier last season and the addition of Deontae Cooper, a prized 2010 recruit who sat out last season with a knee injury.

Fogerson was a star running back at Seattle’s O’Dea High School before moving on to UW. His younger brother, Zach, is a freshman fullback for the Huskies.

Sarkisian released a statement through the UW athletic department without naming Fogerson, which read: “We are aware of an arrest of a member of the UW football team. We are still gathering information and, if and when any action is taken on our part, we will have further comment.”
