TACOMA — A boat captain’s medical emergency caused the disruption of weekend ferry service between Tacoma and Vashon Island.
Washington State Ferries spokesman Ian Sterling told The News Tribune that the ferry was preparing to depart from Point Defiance on Christmas Eve when the captain fell ill. The ferry then pulled away prematurely from the dock, damaging the apron.
A Christmas Day bulletin on Washington State Ferries’ website says the route remains out of service. Until repairs to the dock apron are complete, passengers are asked to use service between either Southworth in Kitsap County or Fauntleroy in West Seattle.
Sterling says the captain has been with the ferry service for many years. He declined to release his name.
