VASHON – Vashon Island School Superintendent Marguerite “Mimi” Walker has been fired amid an investigation into her financial dealings, and her lawyer says she will appeal and seek a public hearing.
School board Chairwoman Susan Lofland said an internal investigation indicated Walker paid herself more than $16,000 in unauthorized compensation in addition to her $109,245 base salary.
Lofland also accused Walker of making more than $5,000 in personal calls on her district cellular telephone and of withholding information on a decline in a reserve fund from 8.5 percent of the budget in 2003-2004 to less than 2.6 percent this year.
An investigation is being made by the state auditor’s office at the board’s request.
Walker, 42, was placed on paid administrative leave April 9, and Terry Lindquist, retired superintendent of the Puget Sound Educational Service District, was appointed acting superintendent on April 29.
Walker has been superintendent of the 1,600-student school system since 2000. The district has three schools and a $13 million annual budget.
