EVERETT – A veteran Everett attorney who specializes in family law will be the newest Snohomish County Superior Court commissioner.
Bruce Weiss, 43, has been appointed to a new, fifth commission job. He was among nearly 30 lawyers who applied for the job and seven who were interviewed by the 14 county Superior Court judges.
Weiss hopes to close out his practice and join the four other commissioners by the end of October. The job pays $115,328 a year.
“It was a very difficult decision. There were a number of people well-qualified for the position,” presiding Judge Thomas Wynne said.
Weiss believes there were several reasons for his selection, including that he did well on a poll of county attorneys.
“The judges are familiar with me, and hopefully a big part (of his selection) is my ethics,” Weiss said.
He said he went into law to help people. “I think by being a member of the bench I can do that,” Weiss said.
Although he primarily does family law work, he also has been involved in a variety of areas of law, including defending those accused of misdemeanors. He was a part-time Everett prosecutor in the 1990s.
For six years, he’s been a contract attorney in the volunteer program that looks out for the best interests of children during a legal proceeding. He also has worked as a court arbitrator.
Weiss graduated from the University of Montana Law School in 1986 and earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Indiana University.
