Mill Creek veterans, city leaders, lawmakers and local dignitaries gathered on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new veterans memorial.
When completed, the memorial at Library Park, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway, will feature a flag in the center of a paved courtyard with six basalt columns to be engraved with veterans names.
The new memorial comes in part thanks to the efforts of local veterans Fred Fillbrook and Chuck Wright. The two approached the city council about a memorial and talked about their plan to “any group who’d listen,” said public works director Tom Gathmann.
Requesting to have names engraved on the columns is not restricted to Mill Creek residents. Gathmann said he predicts to have 200 to 300 names engraved.
The cost of engraving will be between $75 and $100 for each veteran. For more information, visit www.cityofmillcreek.com or e-mail veterans@cityofmillcreek.com.
