PORT ANGELES — Investigators of the fatal shooting of a U.S. Forest Service officer and a Sequim-area retiree have released a surveillance video taken minutes before a fugitive died in a shootout.
Video from surveillance cameras inside and outside the Longhouse Market and Deli near the Seven Cedars Casino on U.S. Highway 101 east of Sequim shows Shawn M. Roe, 36, entering the convenience store, making a purchase and then leaving.
As Roe walks toward the door, he appears to notice a “wanted” poster for himself on the front counter.
The clerk and a security guard also recognized Roe from the poster, which authorities had faxed around the area earlier in the day, and the clerk called authorities.
An outside camera shows Roe leaving the store as Clallam County sheriff’s deputies approach. He raises his arm, then falls to the ground after he is shot.
State Patrol Trooper Brian E. George commended the security guard and clerk Tuesday for recognizing Roe and calling for help.
“If Roe wasn’t contacted at that convenience store, we don’t know where he would have went, but we know he was heavily armed, so we’re very fortunate that it didn’t go any further,” George said.
Also at the news conference, authorities announced plans for a memorial service for USFS Officer Kristine Fairbanks at 1 p.m. Monday at Port Angeles Civic Field.
Fairbanks, 51, and Richard Ziegler, 59, a retired California corrections officer, were killed Saturday on the northern Olympic Peninsula near Sequim, about 50 miles west of Seattle.
Investigators said Roe shot Fairbanks after she pulled over the van he was driving near the Dungeness Forks Campground in the Olympic National Forest. He then abandoned the van and walked to Zeigler’s property, shot and killed him and drove off with Zeigler’s truck.
