NEW YORK — More than 11,000 visitor passes to the new Sept. 11 memorial are gone — distributed in the first hours after the ticket website went live.
The memorial opens on Sept. 12, and the site was up Monday morning. Five thousand tickets for vari
ous dates were secured in the first hour alone.
Joe Daniels, president of the foundation building the memorial, tells The Associated Press that the quick response signals interest in ground zero, where “the public has not set foot in for 10 years.”
Families of those who died in the 2001 terror attacks will have special reservations to the memorial that bears the names of almost 3,000 victims.
Daniels says families will be welcomed into a private room with images meant “to bring them peace,” near a reflecting pool.
