Vito Chiechi, who worked in all levels of government then became one of the most respected voices lobbying its leaders, has died. The Olympia resident was 86.
Family members posted the news on his Facebook page.
“To all of our Father Vito’s friends….he left us this morning, he is
at peace with his first love, Dolores Audrey. Thank you for all of your love and support! Stay tuned for information on his celebration of LIFE! Love to all from his family.”
Chiechi’s career in public service and politics began in King County in the early 70s and continued right through the 2011 session of the state Legislature.
A Republican, Chiechi’s resume includes stints as the chief clerk of the state House of Representatives and as the chief of staff of the House Republican Caucus from 1986-90.
Alex Hays, executive director of Mainstream Republicans of Washington, recalled Chiechi recruiting him to run for a state legislative seat in 1989. While Hays didn’t do it, the two developed a lasting friendship.
Hays described him as a “gentleman scholar” and a conscientious leader for the Republican cause, not a political “bomb thrower.”
