Students at Columbia Elementary School walked to school with their parents and several community members during the school’s annual Walktober Wednesdays. Each Wednesday in October, students, parents and staff members, along with special guests, gathered at the Mukilteo Library and walked to school together.
“It’s great way to start the day off with some exercise, teach children about crossing intersections safely, and participate in a community activity,” said Hazel Beiermann, event organizer and PE teacher. “The kids absolutely love this event. They start asking me about it shortly after school begins, so I guess we can say it has become a tradition here at Columbia.”
The Mukilteo Police Department was a strong supporter of the event, as well as the Mukilteo Fire Department, which made a surprise visit with a fire truck.
