TACOMA — The head of the Washington State Patrol, Chief John Batiste, is recovering after suffering a stroke while on vacation in Hawaii over the weekend.
The News Tribune reports that Batiste was vacationing with his family when he had the stroke. Doctors have advised against him flying yet, so he remains in Hawaii, where he is undergoing physical therapy.
Spokesman Bob Calkins says the State Patrol takes it as a good sign that Batiste started therapy so quickly.
He said Batiste hopes to return to the mainland by Thanksgiving and be back at work within a few months.
Batiste was appointed chief in February 2005.
