MONROE — Students at Chain Lake Elementary School lost two days of school, thanks to a broken water main.
About 560 students from kindergarten to fifth grade missed school Tuesday after thousands of gallons of water flooded school grounds, located at 12125 Chain Lake Road. School is expected to be out again today.
Staff discovered the break in the underground pipe on Monday night. Parents were notified by mass email that evening and by automated phone calls on Tuesday morning, district spokeswoman Rosemary O’Neil said.
District staff worked on repairing the leak Tuesday. Classes were suspended today to give time for the materials to harden before the water can be safely turned on again, O’Neil said. School officials won’t learn until then if the pipe has been fixed.
No other damage to the school was reported. The cause of the leak is as yet unknown.
The Monroe Y and the Monroe Boys &Girls Club helped parents by providing full child care Tuesday and Wednesday to children already signed up in their after school programs.
