If meteorologists are right, the only bangs in the sky on the Fourth of July will be fireworks.
The thunder and lightning storms that brought clouds and lots of booms to Western Washington are expected to give way to a cloudy Independence Day, said Danny Mercer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.
There’s a 40 percent chance of scattered showers by this afternoon, decreasing to 20 percent though the evening hours.
Sun breaks are expected with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.
“The odds are better than not that it will be dry around fireworks time,” Mercer said.
A new storm system could bring widespread showers and spots of rain to Snohomish County by Saturday afternoon.
Dryer and warmer weather is expected Sunday, with highs in the mid 70s.
Thunder and lightning are pretty uncommon in the region with just a few storms a year. On Wednesday night, lightning struck 2,500 times in Western Washington. That’s the most strikes since August 1999, according to the Weather Service.
