BELLINGHAM — Western Washington University is one of only two universities in the U.S. still competing to win the $10 million Progressive Automotive X-Prize.
The global competition is aimed at producing a 100-mpg production automobile. At each stage of the competition, some teams are eliminated. The competition had 110 teams a year ago.
Western Washington’s Vehicle Research Institute and Cornell University are the only two American universities among the 41 teams that will run a series of tests at Michigan International Speedway between April 26 and May 7 in Brooklyn, Mich. The prototype cars will be tested in Michigan on braking speed, lane change ability, acceleration and refueling/recharging time.
