A man working on an Everett street project was hit by a car Tuesday morning as he crossed eastbound on Rucker Avenue at California Street. He was hurt and needed to be transported to the hospital. Officials said his injuries aren’t life threatening.
The worker, who was wearing his orange safety vest, started walking in the crosswalk before the light turned green, Everett Police Sgt. John DeRousse told us. The responding officer told DeRousse it appears both the driver and the worker weren’t paying attention, although police are still investigating.
The worker is employed by KLB Construction, a company that does lots of work for the city of Everett. Right now, contractors are working on a streetscape project in the area where the man was hit. If you’ve driven down Rucker lately by the library, you can see all the hubbub and torn up streets.
So why didn’t you read this Wednesday in The Herald?
None of the people employed by the city who usually answer reporters’ questions could seem to find out what happened. Two reporters made repeated calls for a day-and-a-half before the details reported above could be confirmed.
Even though time has passed, I still think you ought to know about this mishap. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to be extra cautious while driving (and walking) through work zones, particularly the one at Rucker and California. It was a close call, one that could have ended up much worse.
