OAK HARBOR — Navy Cmdr. Timothy F. Murphy, commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron 129, has been relieved of his duties at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station because of what Navy officials call a loss of confidence in his ability to command.
Murphy was cited early Sunday morning by An
acortes police for drunken driving.
Naval Air Force Electronic Attack Wing Pacific commander Capt. Christopher Shay removed Murphy from command, Navy officials said Tuesday.
Until a permanent replacement has been chosen, Capt. John P. Springett assumes command of the VAQ 129 squadron of EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler aircraft.
Navy officials said standards of conduct and performance for commanding officers are high.
In his career, Murphy, 43, has accumulated more than 3,400 flight hours and 680 carrier landings, primarily in the EA-6B. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement medals.
