ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska forestry officials continued their attack Monday from the air, water and ground on a 19-square mile wildfire 15 miles northwest of Fairbanks.
Warm temperatures and low relative humidity contributed to the spread of the Hastings Fire between Washington Creek and the Chatanika River.
More than 500 firefighters are on the fire.
Aircraft attempted to slow the fire’s growth on its east flank, the side nearest to cabins and the trans-Alaska pipeline.
The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center says boats are shuttling firefighters to cabins along the Chatanika to assist with structure protection. Bulldozers continue to complete fire break lines between the fire and homes.
The fire began May 30. The cause is unknown.
As of Monday morning, 42 fires were burning, including two new ones. Four others were reported extinguished.
