MARYSVILLE – After a two-hour selection process, Marysville City Council members on Monday selected Carmen Rasmussen to fill a two-year unexpired term on the council.
She was among 13 people who applied to fill the vacancy. Mayor Dennis Kendall administered the oath of office and she took her seat with the council after the public interviews and five rounds of council votes.
She is filling the seat vacated by Lisa Vares, who resigned in November to devote more time to her job and family.
Rasmussen, 39, is the owner of a competitive sled dog team and Alpine Outfitters, a small, Web-based retail business that specializes in equipment for such teams. She worked from 1988-1998 as a corrections counselor for Snohomish County Corrections, where she was responsible for inmate counseling and case management. She worked to find alternate funding as well as cost-cutting measures for inmate medical costs and saved the county more than $100,000, she said.
In addition to training and racing a husky sled dog team, Rasmussen has worked as a volunteer in the Marysville School District, Marysville Little League and supports her children in their sports and other activities, including the Marysville-Pilchuck High School marching band.
“I’m really excited and eager to get to work and jump in and learn as much as I can and do a great job,” she said.
She is married to Marysville police Sgt. Darin Rasmussen. They have two children, Andrea, 14, and Chris, 11.
