MARYSVILLE – A 29-year-old Marysville woman awoke to the sound of someone kicking open the back door of her home.
When she heard someone in her house, she called 911 and hid with her 3-year-old son in his bedroom.
Police responded about 3:10 a.m. last Saturday and found a 21-year-old Stanwood man in the woman’s living room in the 6300 block of 54th Drive NE, Marysville police Cmdr. Ralph Krusey said.
The man was reportedly carrying jewelry, handheld video games and other items from around the home, Krusey said.
He was arrested for investigation of residential burglary.
“It was an excellent response by the officers to get there in time and take him into custody,” Krusey said.
Residential break-ins rarely occur in Marysville when people are home, Krusey said.
People should leave their homes if they suspect a burglar is inside, but only if they can do so without being seen, Krusey said.
The next-best option is to call for help and hide, as the woman did Saturday, he said.
“The woman did the right thing by calling 911 and not trying to confront the suspect, and then going back to protect her child,” he said.
Police sneaked up on the man by entering through the open back door. Other officers waited in front of the house in case he tried to escape.
The man was unarmed and arrested without incident, Krusey said.
