SPRINGDALE — A missing woman has been found dead after an intense search near Springdale, northwest of Spokane, and her former boyfriend is in jail for investigation of first-degree murder.
Stevens County Sheriff Craig Thayer says 28-year-old Cheryl Lynn Hayward was reported missing July 14.
Friends and relatives say she had recently left her longtime boyfriend, 42-year-old Preston Lee Rogers Jr. She was losing weight, had a new boyfriend and was looking forward to a job interview.
A close neighbor, 53-year-old Karl Miller, says he persuaded Rogers to reveal the location of Hayward’s body. He was arrested after her remains were found Tuesday in a wooded area off Cemetery Road.
Miller says Rogers was apologetic, telling authorities he was upset over her leaving and just snapped.
