MALTBY — A Monroe woman died late Tuesday when she was struck by an SUV on Highway 522 while trying to retrieve lost items from the road, the Washington State Patrol said.
Alicia Chavez Barragan, 51, had exited a vehicle parked on the westbound shoulder near Echo Lake Road and was crossing both lanes when she was struck and killed by an eastbound Audi SUV driven by a 34-year-old Monroe man, the patrol said. The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m., after dark.
Three other occupants of the parked vehicle were not hurt.
The accident is under investigation.
