LYNNWOOD – A pet store employee who was run over by a car while trying to save a customer’s pet duck Friday received multiple fractures to her pelvis, ankle and foot, according to court documents.
The woman, 43, raced to rescue the duck from being hit by a suspected shoplifter who allegedly was trying to get away from a security guard Friday morning.
The woman’s right foot was almost severed at the ankle, and it’s possible she may lose the foot, according to court papers.
The woman was listed in satisfactory condition Monday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a spokeswoman said.
The suspected shoplifter, Kenneth Quinlan, 35, was being held at the Snohomish County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail for investigation of vehicular assault and third-degree assault.
The man allegedly took a $250 iPod speaker system from a nearby store. His girlfriend was buying crickets for her pet duck at Petco.
A security guard chased Quinlan, a fight broke out and he tried to flee in his girlfriend’s car, the documents said. The man knocked his girlfriend over with the car, she dropped the duck and the Petco employee jumped in front of the vehicle, trying to save the bird.
The man allegedly hurled racial slurs at the security guard who tried to detain him for police. After his arrest, he told officers he’d been given a dose of methadone at a Lynnwood clinic and also used cocaine earlier in the day, according to court papers.
