Woodinville teen drowns in Alta Lake

OROVILLE – A 16-year-old boy drowned on a church outing at Alta Lake State Park, and a man was missing and presumed drowned in Lake Washington, authorities said.

Brandon Irby, 16, of Woodinville was under water for more than 30 minutes Saturday before he was found by volunteer divers at the scene, four miles southwest of Pateros in north-central Washington, according to a news release from Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers.

The volunteers, Bruce McLeod of Lake Stevens, Jared Reidt of Bothell, Mike Massee of Lake Stevens and Lee White of Denver, began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Irby was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital in Brewster, Rogers wrote.

“I am extremely sorry for the family’s loss, but I want to thank all of the volunteers at the scene who did what they could to try and save Brandon,” the sheriff added.

Irby and his sister had been helping with a Northshore Baptist Church youth summer camp, said Pen Cook, junior high youth pastor at the Bothell congregation.

Meanwhile, Seattle police searched without success Sunday for a 52-year-old SeaTac man who was missing and presumed drowned about 400 yards offshore of Magnuson Park in the northern part of Lake Washington.

The man was on a boat about 3:15 p.m. when one of his three companions jumped into the water and began to panic, police spokeswoman Renee Witt said. The man then jumped in to help him and vanished. The panicked swimmer was rescued by others.

Someone on a nearby sailboat leaped in to try to find the man, hurt his shoulder and was rescued by other boaters.

Police used a sonar scanner in an unsuccessful attempt to find the missing man, described as about 5 feet, 10 inches with blue eyes and white hair and wearing blue swim shorts.
