Japan: U.S. sub collides with tanker
The USS Newport News nuclear submarine and a Japanese oil tanker collided in the Arabian Sea late Monday, but there were no injuries on either vessel and only light damage reported to the tanker, the U.S. Navy and Japanese officials said. The bow of the nuclear-powered Newport News hit the stern of the oil tanker Mogamigawa as the vessels were passing just outside the Straits of Hormuz.
Venezuela: Firms to be nationalized
President Hugo Chavez announced plans Monday to nationalize Venezuela’s electrical and telecommunications companies, pledging to create a socialist state in a bold move with echoes of Fidel Castro’s revolution in Cuba. “We’re moving toward a socialist republic of Venezuela,” said Chavez, who also said he wanted a constitutional amendment to eliminate the autonomy of the Central Bank and would soon ask the National Assembly, solidly controlled by his allies, to give him greater powers to legislate by presidential decree.
