The Iraqi Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that it will begin accepting applications from Iraqis who want to attend U.S. military academies. Iraqis between the ages of 18 and 22 who are fluent in English and in good physical condition can apply to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., said Iraqi Brig. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari.
India: Order bans child labor
India’s government is banning the employment of children under age 14 as domestic servants or workers in hotels, restaurants and small teashops in a bid to protect young people from poor families. The order issued Tuesday also prohibits employing children in spas, motels, tourist resorts or other recreational centers, the Labor Ministry said. India already bars child labor in hazardous industries, but the rules are widely ignored.
Thailand: Bomb kills police officers
A bomb planted along a railroad in southern Thailand exploded early Wednesday and killed three police officers, a day after suspected Muslim separatists carried out at least 100 attacks, police said. Another bomb exploded Wednesday afternoon at a school construction site in Pattani town, killing an army officer, police said. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Thailand’s three Muslim-dominated provinces – Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat – since a resurgence of a violent Islamic separatist movement in January 2004.
