Hundreds of Canadian and Afghan soldiers raided Taliban strongholds throughout southern orchards in Kandahar province Sunday, sparking fighting that killed at least 15 militants and one Canadian. In a sign of the deadly Taliban threat in the south, the British government is preparing to deploy hundreds of extra soldiers and more equipment to Helmand province.
India: Nuke-capable missile fired
India test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni III missile Sunday for the first time, the Defense Ministry said. The launch of India’s longest-range missile, able to fly 1,865 miles, apparently is being viewed as a routine test.
China: Injuries from chlorine leak
Fumes from a leak of liquid chlorine at a chemical plant in China’s northwest left 164 people hospitalized, mostly children and elderly who lived nearby, a government news agency and plant employees said today. The leak occurred Sunday evening at the Xing’erte Chemical Products Co. in Yinchuan, the Xinhua News Agency said. It said the leak, blamed on a break in a rusty pipe, was under control today.
