China has complained to the Canadian government about its decision to bestow honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama, saying the gesture could harm relations. The minister-counselor at the Chinese embassy in Ottawa said China has relayed its disapproval and its demand that Canada continues to recognize Tibet as a part of China. “We said that Dalai Lama is a separatist, so I don’t think he should be honored with that and that will harm the Canadian image and also harm the relationship between China and Canada,” the minister said Wednesday.
Britain: Power blackouts hit London
Power blackouts prompted by high temperatures struck more than 1,000 businesses in London’s major shopping district and part of the capital’s transit network Thursday. High energy demand led to faults in the city’s power system, which caused outages starting in the central Soho district, the energy company EDF said in a statement. Temperatures reached 86 degrees in central London on Thursday, the weather center said.
