Afghanistan: Vigilante hearing delay
A hearing for three Americans charged with torturing Afghans on a private anti-terror mission was postponed on Monday for 10 days at the defendants’ request after they brought in American lawyers. Jonathan “Jack” Idema, Edward Caraballo and Brent Bennett were arrested July 5 when authorities freed about a dozen Afghans from a private home in Kabul. The men were allegedly beaten, deprived of food and doused with hot water.
The Sudanese government has failed to stop attacks on black farmers in western Darfur, a senior U.N. official said Monday, the last day of a 30-day grace period the Security Council had granted before considering sanctions. At the same time, the government has provided aid groups with access to the area and says it has arrested about 200 militia leaders responsible for the attacks. Such progress, however slight, makes the Security Council unlikely to press its threats of economic and diplomatic sanctions just yet, diplomats said Monday.
Japan: Typhoon Chaba kills 7
A powerful typhoon plowed into southern Japan on Monday, killing at least seven people and injuring 73. Canada: Whale still trapped
A humpback whale trapped for more than a week behind a Nova Scotia hydroelectric dam refused the latest attempt Monday to lure him back to the ocean. Rescuers used the recorded sounds of feeding humpbacks to try to coax the 161/2 ton animal through the sluice gates that separate the Annapolis River from the Atlantic Ocean.
