Taiwan’s army wants to buy 30 Boeing Apache attack helicopters from the United States, an official said Tuesday, in a deal that would almost certainly roil rival China. Col. Dai Kuang-chao said the military opted for the Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow over Bell’s AH-1Z Cobra because it better suited the army’s needs. “This fits our military requirements,” Dai said. “The Cobra may be a bit newer, but it is still not battle proven.” The deal, worth $1.5 billion, must be approved by the U.S. government and Taiwan’s Legislature.
Philippines: 10 marines missing
Philippine marines searching for a kidnapped Italian priest fought Muslim insurgents on a southern island Tuesday, and officials said four soldiers and two suspected Abu Sayyaf guerrillas died. Ten marines remained unaccounted for late Tuesday, a spokesman for the marines said. Nine other marines were wounded in the firefight in Tipo Tipo town on Basilan island. About 50 troops went to the area to check on reports of sightings of the Rev. Giancarlo Bossi, a 57-year-old missionary from Milan who was kidnapped by gunmen on June 10.
Iran: Adulterer stoned to death
A man convicted of adultery was stoned to death last week, a judiciary spokesman said Tuesday, the first time in years that the country has confirmed such an execution. Jafar Kiani was stoned to death Thursday in Aghchekand, 124 miles west of Tehran, a spokesman said. Death sentences are carried out in Iran after they are upheld by the Supreme Court. Under Iran’s Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning. The official did not elaborate on how the stoning was carried out.
