A mud-spewing volcano in the ocean floor that has roiled waters off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago is a potential hazard that small boats should avoid, authorities said Thursday. Gas bubbling up from the fissure could reduce buoyancy and sink vessels in the area, which was discovered Monday five miles northeast of Trinidad, according to the Caribbean nation’s coast guard. An advisory has been issued for small boats.
Pakistan: Cruise missile passes test
Pakistan said it successfully test-fired a cruise missile Thursday capable of delivering nuclear warheads deep into India. The military says it has extended the range of the missile, first tested in 2005, to 435 miles – enough to reach New Delhi, the capital of archrival India. Pakistan routinely tests various nuclear-capable missiles in its arsenal, believed to be designed mainly to match that of neighboring archrival India.
Congo: Gunfire kills four gorillas
Four rare mountain gorillas, including an alpha-male silverback, were shot dead at Congo’s Virunga National Park, conservationists said Thursday. The International Gorilla Conservation Program, a partnership of conservation groups that includes the World Wildlife Fund, said it was unclear who shot the three females and one male and why they were killed. Seven gorillas have been killed there in seven months. Residents heard gunshots Sunday night and alerted park rangers, who discovered the dead gorillas the following morning.
