Israel: Ex-Hamas official released
The Israeli military released a former Palestinian education minister, Nasser Shaer, swept up in a West Bank raid in May, saying Tuesday he had agreed to renounce his Hamas faction membership and would no longer hold positions for the militant Islamic group. Separately, Israeli Cabinet ministers approved a list of 256 Palestinian prisoners to be released Friday in a gesture of support for moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Ukraine: Toxic gas cloud sickens 20
A freight train derailed in Lviv and released a cloud of toxic gas that sent at least 20 people to hospitals. Hundreds of people were evacuated and others fled their homes on their own after the Monday evening derailment sparked a fire in a cargo of yellow phosphorous, creating a cloud of gas that affected 14 villages in the former Soviet republic. A spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry said after the cloud dispersed that it was not life-threatening.
Brazil: Video shows 83 dolphins slain
A crew of Brazilian fishermen was captured on video killing 83 dolphins and joking about their illegal haul, Brazil’s Ibama environmental protection agency said Tuesday. The video showed the fishermen netting the dolphins, which suffocated because they could not surface to breathe. Fishermen who illegally snag dolphins usually sell the meat as shark bait, Globo TV said.
