Thousands of people were evacuated after a long-dormant volcano erupted late Tuesday and again early Wednesday, provoking avalanches and floods that swept away houses and bridges. The Nevado del Huila volcano’s eruptions were its first on record since Colombia was colonized by the Spanish 500 years ago. There are about 10,000 people living in the area around the volcano, and about 3,500 had been evacuated, the director of the national disaster office said after flying over the volcano in southwest Colombia.
Nigeria: Islamic militants routed
Nigerian soldiers killed at least 25 suspected Islamic militants Wednesday while battling extremists who attacked a police station a day earlier in Kano, a military spokesman said. Following the attack on the police station Tuesday, which killed a dozen officers and a police officer’s wife, hundreds of soldiers and police surrounded the neighborhood Wednesday and drove the militants out, military officials said. An army spokesman called the militants self-styled “Taliban” extremists who crossed into Nigeria from neighboring Chad.
