EVERETT — An Everett man who allegedly triggered a head-on collision on I-5 Wednesday night during a police chase was jailed early this morning and likely will make a first appearance in court Friday.
The man tried to flee police by driving the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of I-5, officials said.
The crash happened in the HOV lane near 75th Street SE, just north of Highway 526, also called the Boeing Freeway, Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said. The drivers of the two vehicles were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Everett police had tried to stop the man because they believed he was driving a stolen car, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
Officers put down spike strips before trying to pull the man over in case he tried to get away, Goetz said. When officers turned on lights and sirens, the man took off, hit the spike strips and kept going.
Everett officers didn’t give chase, but the man continued onto I-5 the wrong way before crashing. The man who fled, 24, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude police.
The freeway was closed for several hours overnight as police investigated the incident.
