ROCHE HARBOR — A Washington state Ecology Department spokeswoman says an 85-foot yacht that burned for hours before firefighters were able to put out the flames has sunk at the Roche Harbor marina and resort on San Juan Island.
Spokeswoman Joye Redfield-Wilder said that the yacht was carrying as much as 1,600 gallons of diesel. She says spilled fuel is being collected from a containment area. Efforts are also being made to pump the remaining fuel from the boat’s tanks.
A salvage company has been hired.
KOMO-TV reports that no other boats were damaged by Wednesday’s fire. There were no reports of injuries.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Roche Harbor is about 80 miles north of Seattle.
