YAKIMA — The Yakima City Council is expected to expand a ban on panhandling.
At its meeting Tuesday the council is considering an ordinance to expand the ban from 15 to 26 intersections.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports one of the intersections is were three panhandlers were recently arrested on suspicion of loitering to purchase drugs.
City Manager Tony O’Rourke says the public is being duped into believing panhandlers need money for food when they spend it instead on alcohol or drugs.
The panhandling ban does not restrict a person from holding a sign, such as a political campaign sign.
