GLEED — Authorities said a 90-year-old woman died of smoke inhalation when her home in Gleed caught fire.
Gleed fire Chief James Kohl said firefighters responded to a call late Friday. Responders found Bertha Garrison on the kitchen floor.
Kohl said she may have been trying to get out the back door or get some water to put the fire out.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that medics performed CPR at the scene, but she died while being taken to a hospital. She was the first fatality the district has ever had.
Kohl said the fire is considered accidental, but its cause is still under investigation.
