Local school bus drivers demonstrated their driving skills at an annual Bus Safety Roadeo held recently at Mariner High School in south Everett. Drivers from the Bellingham, Edmonds and Marysville school districts competed in the regional competition. Drivers were tested on their knowledge of road laws and skill at pre-tripping the bus to ensure safe operation, as well as backing, parallel parking, cornering, loading students, rail-grade crossings and more.
Mukilteo School District driver Aaron Sushinsky won first place and was named safest driver in the region. Tim Stafford came in second.
Elsewhere, Tracey Rachuy from the Northshore School District also was named a regional winner.
There also was a category for special needs transportation, which included a driver and assistant. Shana Wickline and Gail Fox, from the Northshore School District, were among the regional winners.
The regional winners will now compete in a state-level Safety Roadeo this summer.
In other local competition, Mukilteo’s Katie Hansen placed second in a rookie division.
