HOQUIAM — It’s probably not a good idea to lend a car to an unlicensed, underage driver, as one person learned Saturday night.
A 14-year old Aberdeen boy was apprehended by Hoquiam police Saturday night after allegedly hitting a parked car and fleeing back home. He had apparently borrowed the red 1993 Chevrolet Camaro with permission, according to the police report.
According to Hoquiam police, the boy was driving the car about 10 p.m. when he struck the rear end of a legally parked 1991 Mazda. The impact pushed the Mazda up and over the curb into the yard in front of where it had been parked, then into a 2006 Jeep Cherokee that was parked in the yard, police said. The Camaro then fled the scene, heading eastbound, police said. Police collected pieces of the Camaro that had broken off and were left at the accident scene.
At 10:45 p.m., the owner of the Mazda called to report a friend of his saw a damaged red Camaro in neighboring Aberdeen. A Hoquiam officer responded and matched the pieces collected with those missing from the severely damaged front end.
The police found the car’s owner and, through witnesses, determined the car had been driven by a 14-year-old boy, albeit with the permission of a friend who was not the owner, at the time of the collision, the report says.
Police found the driver, who admitted he was driving and that he had looked down momentarily and was unable to avoid hitting the Mazda when he looked back up, the report says.
According to the police report, the boy said he got scared and drove away.
The 14-year-old was released to his parents, but he is expected to be charged in juvenile court with hit and run of an unattended vehicle and driving without a license.
The police report states that the dollar amount of damage to the vehicles is unknown but substantial.
